White Rim in a Day(WRIAD) March 30th, 2008

The White Rim Rd is a 74 mile long jeep road that runs through the heart of Canyonlands National Park around the "Island in the Sky" region. The full route, as pioneered by Buzz Burrell utlizes 24miles of connector road to make a full loop. The last weekend in March Charles Corfield and I set out from Boulder for Utah and our attempt at the road. I would be pacing approximately 50miles and crewing the rest, while Greg filled in driving the truck while I ran. The entire route is crew accessible in a good 4x4 vehicle making resupply of food and water easy if you have the necessary crew. The run began at 4am on Saturday morning at the base of the Shafer trail. The weather was spectacular all day long and Charles put in a good time of less than 20h for the entire route. This is by no means an easy route and should only be attempted by very experienced ultra runners. A mountain bike of the road is more common, but still a tough undertaking. Below you'll find an assortment of pictures from the day, some of which were taken with my dSLR from the truck, others with my mini point and shoot midrun. If you anyone would like full size images please email me.
